Idea Factory — Posting To Multiple Social Networks
I have a few social networking accounts. Facebook, MySpace (a few, actually), Twitter, LinkedIn, just for starters. And it’s time consuming to go through all of them to keep up with everything that going on, let alone updating all of the sites as much as is needed to keep involved with the others. Trillian’s Astra is a good start for the reading everything in a one-stop-shop approach, but it doesn’t go the other way around. Even with Astra, I still need to log into the sites one at a time to publish my information. This can be rather time consuming.
What I’d like is to be able to publish either to all sites or to a selected number of sites with a single mouse click. Take my accounts, give me a way to control the publishing (check box list, rules based engine, customized groupings) and away we go…
Ping.fm seems to be a good start down this road. TweetDeck has a really slick interface and the ability to post to both Twitter and Facebook at the same time.
Problems I Forsee
- Anyone who develops this will be at the mercy of the individual social networks. MySpace has a vested interest in keeping this kind of thing from working, as they make money off of advertising (and if I can post without logging in, I never see said ads).
- Should someone take this idea and get it up and running, you can count on one or more of the social networks ‘improving’ something to break your app once you get to some critical mass
- Short of embedding ads in the interface, I don’t know how much money there would be in this. Even if someone takes this and sets it up for purely altruistic reasons, someone’s got to pay for hosting and bandwidth (which would probably be quite considerable).
