I take privacy issues pretty seriously. So, here are the details about how this site captures and uses information.

Google Analytics

This site does participate in Google Analytics. I use it as a tool to improve my own writing, showing me what does and doesn’t work. If you aren’t a fan (either here or elsewhere), Google has released an opt out plugin for IE, Chrome and Firefox.

Advertising

Never had it; never will.

Amazon Links

From time to time, I’ll link to a product on Amazon (typically a book). If you click through the link and buy anything during that trip (the specific product linked or a CD you thought of while you were there), I receive a pittance commission from Amazon — something on the order of 4%.

Other sites do this. Here’s how to tell if it’s going to happen to you on another site: Mouse over the link (like the Amazon one above) and read the URL. If you see something in the URL like “<company name>-20″, then that’s a commission generating link.

Firefox Plug-Ins

Here are some Firefox plug-ins that I recommend to protect your privacy:

  • Ghostery: tells you what scripts are tracking you on each site you visit
  • Better Privacy: kills off flash cookies and DOM objects
  • TACO: Targeted Advertising Cookie Opt-out stops doubleclick cookies (and the like)
